Volunteering is not only “the right thing to do;” it’s a wonderful way for parents to get deeper insight into the social and emotional climate of the school(s) where they might send their kids to learn. That is–if you’re making school choices on behalf of your kids, do some volunteering at each of the schools you’re considering; you’ll learn things that can’t be written down in the “official description” of a school. (I’m not afraid to suggest this because I think Hampden #55–”my” neighborhood school–will just feel good to a volunteer who meets the kids and staff.)
